PLOT SYNOPSIS: “Beethoven Lives Upstairs” is a world-famous production that features a lively exchange of letters between young Christoph and his uncle. Their subject is the “madman” who has moved into the upstairs apartment of Christoph’s Vienna home. The funereal second movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony sets the scene as we travel back in time from March 26, 1827, the day of Beethoven's death, into the more intimate setting of young Christoph's house in Vienna a few years before. Christoph's father has just died, and Beethoven has taken the room upstairs. As the correspondence with his uncle unfolds, Christoph recounts the horrors of the composer standing at the window, water dripping down into their apartment and Beethoven playing late into the night. Finally, after attending the famous first performance of the Ninth Symphony, Christoph comes to understand the genius of Beethoven, the torment of his deafness, and the beauty of his music.
Wilmington Symphony Orchestra's "WSO's Classical Kids!"
Not just a concert, "WSO's Classical Kids" is a new 10-week education program that includes a lesson plan for local educators to include in their curriculum leading up to the concert at the Wilson Center. Children will learn about Beethoven and his compositions with a simple lesson in music theory. Included in the lesson plan “packet” is a children’s book about the composer, information about the concert and pre-concert activities for families, and an education resource guide that includes assignments, recordings, and a discussion and activities for the educators to use.
ARTS FAIR
Join us in the Wilson Center lobby before the concert at 2:30pm
Not only will children receive a comprehensive education leading up to an interactive and fun concert at the Wilson Center, they will also participate in educational pre-concert activities! Before the concert, the WSO will host an Orchestra Discovery Zone in the Wilson Center lobby for young children to become acquainted with the instruments in an orchestra and visit with other children's organizations from around the area. Families will have access to all that our nonprofit community has to offer.
