WILMINGTON, NC – The Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings will hold auditions for new members on Thursdays, August 31 and September 7, 2017 at the UNCW Cultural Arts Building.  Times by appointment.  For auditions times and required music, please visit http://wsoyouth.blogspot.com/.

Dee Perry says of her daughter’s experience in the Wilmington Symphony’s youth program, “Blythe plays violin in the Junior Strings program. She has been playing violin for six years and this is her second year in Junior Strings.  It has been a wonderful experience for her. Not only have her violin skills improved, but also her confidence and comfort level playing in front of a large audience. She now plays a wide variety of music and enjoys playing everything from fiddle tunes to classical. Blythe looks forward to her practices and performances with the Junior Strings. We are lucky to have such an amazing program in our community.”

The Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra is conducted by Dr. Steven Errante and managed by Robert Norem. The Junior Strings is directed by award-winning music educator, Jane Tierney.  Conductor Dr. Steven Errante conducts for the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of the UNCW Department of Music faculty.

The mission of the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings is to enrich the lives of Cape Fear area youth by providing talented young musicians with unique orchestral training and performing opportunities.  These ensembles perform four concerts per year, which creates opportunities for more than 100 young musicians to perform on stage.

Wilmington Symphony Orchestra Holds Auditions for 2017-18 Season

WILMINGTON, NC – The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra will hold auditions for new members on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at the UNCW Cultural Arts Building.  Times by appointment.  Interested musicians must schedule an audition time by emailing the WSO Orchestra Manager, Shirley Lebo at orchestramgr@wilmingtonsymphony.org.  Applications and required audition music are available at www.wilmingtonsymphony.org, or by calling the symphony office at 910-791-9262.

When asked what attracts her to performing in the Wilmington Symphony, violinist Christine Meyer says, "The orchestra is like a second family to me; looking around I see members that have been in the orchestra since it first started, members that I’ve grown up watching play in concerts, but I also see new faces joining the orchestra from the youth orchestra and new soon-to-be-friends from the community and university."

Musicians for the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra are local instrumentalists and include UNCW music faculty and students who rehearse and present orchestral repertoire drawn from the eighteenth to twentieth-first centuries.  Instruments include flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin, viola, cello, bass, percussion, and harp.

The Conductor is Dr. Steven Errante, who is also a member of the UNCW Department of Music faculty.  About eight concerts per year are produced by the orchestra, including the Masterworks Series, Symphony Pops! and other special events.

In addition to playing orchestra concerts, many of the Wilmington Symphony musicians also have opportunities to play for special events such as weddings and receptions, either in small groups or as soloists.
