Audition Information

New Member Auditions

Monday Evening, January 7, 2008 (7:30 PM)

The musicians are UNCW music faculty, local amateur and professional instrumentalists, and UNCW students who volunteer their time and talents to rehearse and present orchestral repertoire drawn from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. The conductor, Dr. Steven Errante, is associate professor of music at UNCW.

Auditions are normally held twice a year, in August and January. Prospective members will be asked to play the required audition music and sight-read before the conductor and a committee of the principal chair players. Rhythmic accuracy and intonation are the most important qualities we look for in the prepared material, and solid sight-reading skills are also expected.

The four audition results are:

  1. Accepted for 5-year membership: becomes a voting member of the WSO with a 5-year seat in the orchestra.
  2. Accepted for UNCW student membership: same as 5-year membership except that the member must re-audition when his or her student status changes (upon graduation from UNCW).
  3. Will call as needed: may be asked to play certain concerts as the needs of the orchestra require; especially as substitutes or extra players in sections which are full.
  4. Not accepted: may choose to re-audition at a later date, preferably at least a year later. The orchestra may deny requests for repeated auditions if there is no evidence that the player has advanced in skill level.

Who can Audition

Anyone who has graduated from high-school. High-school students who have completed at least two semesters in good standing with the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra may audition. However, high-school students must continue membership in good standing with the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra in order to participate in the WSO, and will be considered "as-needed" players.

Interested musicians must schedule an audition time by contacting the WSO orchestra manager. To contact the Orchestra Manager, call: 910 791-9262 or send an e-mail to:orchestramgr@wilmingtonsymphony.org. Interested musicians may also download the application form and audition music below.

Attendance Policy

Members are expected to attend all rehearsals (including the dress rehearsal) and concerts.

  • If illness or planned absences cause you to miss more than one third of the required regular rehearsals for a particular concert, please notify the Orchestra Manager and use this as one of your allowable missed concerts.
  • If conflicts require you to miss a dress rehearsal, you must notify the orchestra manager at the latest by the first rehearsal for the concert. Participation in that concert will be at the discretion of the conductor.
  • To remain a member in good standing, you may miss no more that two concerts per season. Players missing three or more concerts will be informed by letter and will have to reaudition to reinstate membership. In addition, principal/associate principal players who miss more than one concert in a season retain membership but give up their chair..
